One of my many favorite anthems is based on a wonderful hymn, "When I Survey the Wondrous Cross". It is arranged by Gilbert Martin. Each time I hear it, or direct it, I am overwhelmed with love for my Lord. You would think that by now, I would become immune to it, but the love is just as strong and my heart weeps just as deeply. I could write forever about Lenten anthems; I know the church choir gets tired of me talking about how much I love Lenten music. But as they (whoever they are) say, when you find your passion, be passionate about it and live that passion. That is what I am going to do these next forty days - live my passion, while remembering the Passion of my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
When I survey the wondrous cross
on which the Prince of Glory died;
my richest gain I count but loss,
and pour contempt on all my pride.
Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast,
save in the death of Christ, my God;
all the vain things that charm me most,
I sacrifice them to his blood.
See, from his head, his hands, his feet,
sorrow and love flow mingled down.
Did e'er such love and sorrow meet,
or thorns compose so rich a crown.
Were the whole realm of nature mine,
that were an offering far too small;
love so amazing, so divine,
demands my soul, my life, my all.

Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast,

all the vain things that charm me most,
